About the hotel:
Gamlebyen Hotell in Fredrikstad is a little gem of a hotel, located snugly in the oldest fortified town in Scandinavia, surrounded by spectacular scenery and historical buildings. There are 15 small, cosy rooms, all uniquely furnished with their own personal style. The Executive Suite has a full kitchen and sofa group – perfect for small courses and board meetings, not to mention weddings and other events.
We offer a warm, intimate atmosphere, where you can really relax and enjoy peace and quiet. We want all out guests to enjoy an unforgettable stay.
The hotel has no restaurant, but we can offer lunch at our partner establishment, Major-Stuen, just across the street. Hotel guests qualify for 25% discount on lunch and dinner.
Gamlebyen Hotell enjoys a unique location in the heart of the Old Town. Here you can have a coffee with the locals on the “gossip bench” or jugabenken right outside. A few steps further and you’re at Gamlebyen Gjestgiveri’s breakfast room – you’ll have a lovely start to your day in this old rectory with its vast windows and views of the river and the fortress town.
A lighted ski track, great footpaths and the embankments surround the Old Town, making it virtually impossible not to get some exercise. You’ll find a host of things to do here, whether you’d prefer a jog, taking in some air or waking up slowly with the Old Town’s goats and hens. If you’re lucky, you might even find a freshly laid egg!
A few hundred metres away you’ll find the Gamle Fredrikstad Golf Course’s impressive 18-hole course and, right next door, Kongstenhallen, with separate swimming baths and outdoor pool in the summer. The Actic fitness centre is located here. Both offer a wonderful view of Kongsten Fort, which is open to visitors or as an excursion destination all year round.
The Old Town itself is a great place to spend a lot of time in. Here you can find small shops selling everything but the kitchen sink, clothes shops, metalsmiths, potters, artists, galleries, cafes, restaurants, museums and Glasshytta, where not only can you watch the glass-blowers at work, but you can have a go yourself or do some shopping. The shops are open on Sundays all the year round. There’s aIso a flea market in the square every Saturday and, during Advent, the entire Old Town is transformed into a stress-free, childhood Christmas with a big Christmas market held every weekend.
About the rooms
The hotel consists of no more than 15 small, comfortable rooms – 10 doubles and 5 singles. All of them have been refurbished in historical style recently, and provided with TV and free WiFi. We can also offer a suite with its own kitchen and sofa group – perfect for small groups, such as courses, board meetings and weddings. Our rooms may not be the biggest, but they have a cosy and warm atmosphere.

The Fortified Town
Life is different in the Old Town. Laid-back and comfortable. A special district of Fredrikstad that is home to many people who live in the fortified town’s many impressive buildings. Conversation flows easily between permanent residents and visitors; everyone is welcome here.
Bring some good walking shoes for a morning walk along the embankments. A stroll along the embankments, as we say, gives you peace of mind and a great start to the day. The streets are cobbled so we would advise women to wear wedge heels instead of stilettos when going out on the town.
The surrounding area offers a lot of the services you may need. A free ferry trip will take you to Fredrikstad town centre where you’ll find everything you need in terms of shops, cafes and social life. The same ferry will take you over to the other side of the river where you can get the train to Oslo and international destinations. The bus station is located in the centre of Fredrikstad, where you can catch the airport shuttle bus to Oslo Gardermoen Airport, local buses and not least the bus to beautiful Hvaler, where you can carry on island-hopping with one of the ferries from Skjærhalden.
If you’re travelling here in your own car, there is paid parking close to the hotel. A little further away from the Old Town, you can also find free parking.
Fredrikstad’s Fortified Town is one of the most popular attractions in Norway. And it’s not only well-preserved, but still very much alive. Shops, galleries and café buzz with life, and history is relived when the 18th century meets the present.
