Life is different in the Old Town. This is a separate district in Fredrikstad where many people live and work in the fortress town’s many old and beautiful buildings. The conversation is easy between both residents and visitors, and everyone is welcome here.

Feel free to bring good walking shoes for a morning walk along the ramparts, or to “jangle på vollane”, as we say. This gives peace of mind and a wonderful start to the day. The streets are stone paved, so we recommend that the ladies use wedge heels instead of stiletto heels for more festive events.

The local area can offer much of what you need. A free ferry ride takes you to Fredrikstad city center with everything you need for shops, cafes and nightlife. The same ferry takes you over to the other side of the river, where you will find trains to Oslo and beyond. In the center of Fredrikstad is the bus terminal, with everything from airport bus to Gardermoen, local areas and not least bus to beautiful Hvaler, where you can continue on island hopping with one of the ferries from Skjærhalden.

The old town is a quiet and laid-back district in Fredrikstad, but there is still a lot going on here. You can participate in concerts, exhibitions, theater, festivals and more!

Christmas in Old Town, Fredrikstad

Christmas in the Old Town is just as magical every year. Here you are invited to an atmospheric Christmas time with, among other things, a Christmas fair, shops open on Sundays and Christmas coziness. The Christmas market is open the first three weekends of Advent, both on Saturdays and Sundays.
